WHAT TO DO WHEN THE MOTIVATION GOES… (because trust me, it will happen often)

Let me be clear here, in that I’m not going to tell you what I think people what to hear, nor am I going to tell you what may deem me as a more “cush” coach.. because both of those would be bullshit, and I’m only here to tell people what truly makes them their best.  So put your big girl knickers on. 😉

First, let’s break down the science and psychology of “motivation”. Motivation is described as the “general desire or willingness of someone to do something”… therefore, motivation is basically “what I feel like doing”.

The PROBLEM with relying on what we FEEL LIKE DOING is that it often fails to match up with what is BEST for us. Would we likely live on a diet of fast food and donuts IF it wouldn’t make us unhealthy and severely overweight? Absolutely, most of us would FEEL LIKE DOING that. But we don’t because it WOULD make us unhealthy and severely overweight, so it doesn’t serve our best self.

C’mon though, missing a day at the gym doesn’t ruin your best self. – – You are absolutely CORRECT. In fact, a scheduled rest day is actually even GOOD for the body.  BUUUUUT…

In the grand scheme of things, we aren’t talking about missing one day at the gym when it comes to LACK OF MOTIVATION. We are talking about how relying on motivation EVER will ultimately cause one missed day to turn to two… and three.. and then a whole week, and more.

BOTTOM LINE – STOP gauging how you feel emotionally as a true indicator for whether or not you should go to the gym. Your feelings don’t get a vote. THAT is where discipline must come in and ask the ONLY rational and valid question that matters in that moment:

WILL missing this workout serve my BEST self and goals?

You will find VERY few instances that will actually deserve a “yes” response there, and those are the good one.  Otherwise, choose discipline over motivation every time.
